Firstly, if you haven’t read my initial column, it can be found here. One thing I forgot to mention in my story was an encounter I had with Robin Williams about ten years. I went to a late improv show at the Upright Citizens Brigade on Franklin. If you’re familiar with the scene, a lot of these theaters have improv jams where anyone can join in, but they are usually during off-peak hours. They are normally not fun to attend because people are more concerned with stage time than working with each other.
I had no reason to stay, other than I was already there. Sure enough, Robin Williams popped up to join the group of aspiring improvers. Obviously, everyone wanted the chance to do a scene with him. In improv, it’s very easy to bully other actors, especially with the energy of a Robin Williams, but he was well aware of the situation. He wasn’t there to bigtime everyone, just to be a part of it all, as if the satisfaction of bringing smiles to everyone’s faces was enough. He will definitely be missed.
